Keep alive IMAP interval?

Hi,

I want to configure pine so that it *only* checks for mail
when i push a button (Ctrl-L).

I can achieve this by setting: mail-check-interval=0

But... this leads to the warning:

"Note: mail-check-interval=0 may cause IMAP server
connection to time out"

Which is entirely accurate, as the IMAP connection does
indeed drop out after 30min or so :/

So - is there a way to get pine to keep an IMAP connection
alive at a frequent interval other than by checking for mail?

...or, is there another solution?

I don't have access to our IMAP server. I considered setting
up an IMAP-proxy (IMAPProxy.org) that i could configure to
keep connections alive for say 24 hours (instead of 30min)
- but i only have access to /home/me, and don't have root..

Ideas? Suggestions?

Yours,

Bill

In order to keep an IMAP connection alive you need to send a command every
30 minutes. That command can be anything. An imap server can answer a
command with an unrequested answer, like there is new mail. In another
words, you can not avoid the check for new mail. I would recommend that
you set your check interval to be a high number, something close to 1800
seconds (30 minutes), so that the disruption will be minimal.

There is a small, standalone, program called caffeine that sends an
emulated keystroke at intervals of your choice, to keep windows power
saving from kicking and and keep internet connections alive. This
may do the trick for you.
